Shaffer Architects was founded by Thad Shaffer in 2010, after the dissolution of his previous firm, Reif-Shaffer Architects. Shaffer Architects has specialized in institutional buildings and single family housing, though taking into account the professional history of the principal and his staff, the firm also has experience in new construction and/or remodeling of multi-family housing, dormitories, hotels, offices and retail establishments. We have worked for both the public and private sectors and are experienced in designing projects of many sizes, ranging from the smallest elements of built-in furnishings to the scale of master planning.

The design philosophy of our firm, expressed in each of our projects, is to create buildings or spaces which celebrate order, structure, light and connection. This philosophy does not generate a particular style, but rather a harmonious ordering of elements which respect the character and context of the particular building and its site.

Shaffer Architects maintains a small office of three to five individuals, dependent upon the office's work load. Throughout the design and construction process, the firm welcomes the participation of its clients, be they institutions, developers or individuals, in the many and varied decisions that lead to their project's success. We are dedicated to a high level of client service, to design excellence and to responding conscientiously to our client's budget, schedule and other special needs. We believe that Shaffer Architects combines the experience of a larger firm with the personal service and project focus of a smaller office.

Shaffer Architects is committed to sustainable design. Our green building training allows us to bring to our client's projects a vision of an environmentally responsible and healthy built environment.

Thad Shaffer is an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley, and is grateful that his career path has given him the opportunity to serve his alma mater. Since 1997 the university has been his primary and most devoted client. Several UC departments have returned to his firm for new projects based on their appreciation of previously completed work. He looks forward to maintaining this professional relationship and to supporting the university in achieving its academic and institutional goals.
